Le Cape Malay Choir Board fut fondé en 1939 à l’initiative de I.D. du Plessis (spécialiste auto-proclamé de la culture coloured, défenseur de l’afrikaans qui devint, après l’établissement de l’apartheid, responsable du Département des affaires coloureds) et de représentants des chœurs interprétant des chants traditionnels en afrikaans (Malay Choirs), notamment des membres de la famille Dante, active dans les fêtes du Nouvel an depuis la fin du 19ème siècle. Il organise chaque année des compétitions de chants en afrikaans. Les documents ici reproduits m’ont été remis par le président du CMCB, M. Shafiek April, et des chefs de chœur, ou ont été collectés lors des compétitions auxquelles j’ai pu assister.

The Cape Malay Choir Board was founded in 1939 on the initiative of I.D. du Plessis (a self-proclaimed expert in coloured culture and supporter of Afrikaans who, after the establishment of apartheid, became Commissioner for Coloured Affairs) and of representatives of choirs performing traditional songs in Afrikaans (Malay Choirs), including members of the Dante family who have taken part in New Year festivities since the end of the nineteenth century. It organizes singing competitions in Afrikaans every year. The documents reproduced here were given to me by the CMCB President, Mr Shafiek April, and by some choir directors, or were collected during competitions that I was able to attend.
